From Problem to MVP: Building Lumos Technologies with Method, Purpose, and a Long-Term Vision

Developing a hub of solutions designed for individuals on the autism spectrum requires more than a strong idea or technical expertise. It demands method, responsibility, and a solid foundation from the very beginning. At Lumos Technologies, the development of our Minimum Viable Product (MVP) was conceived not merely as a first product, but as the strategic foundation of a company built for sustainable growth and measurable social impact.

In this article, we share behind-the-scenes insights into this journey, from the conception of the MVP to the legal and operational structuring of the company, with transparency and a long-term perspective.

MVP is not “Simplicity”, it is Strategic Focus

At Lumos Technologies, MVP has never meant a “reduced product,” but rather an essential product. Our goal was to identify a real, recurring, and meaningful problem within the context of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and develop a solution that is viable, testable, and scalable.

Before any technical development began, we invested significant time in:

  • Research on neurodiversity and ASD
  • Review of scientific literature and established guidelines
  • Analysis of existing solutions and identification of unmet needs
  • Understanding the heterogeneity of the autism spectrum

This phase was critical in mitigating common risks in social impact startups: building well-intentioned solutions that lack effectiveness or real-world alignment with user needs.

Research and Evidence as the Basis for Decision-Making

The development of our MVP has been guided by evidence-based decision-making, not assumptions. Every feature included met clear criteria:

  • Does it solve a relevant problem?
  • Can it be tested and validated quickly?
  • Is it technically feasible at this stage?
  • Does it support a scalable product architecture?

Equally important, we made deliberate decisions about what not to include in this initial version.

Development with a Focus on Impact and Scalability

Building an MVP for a sensitive and diverse user base requires heightened attention to user experience, clarity, and simplicity. Every design and functionality decision was made to:

  • Minimize cognitive overload
  • Ensure accessibility
  • Support consistent and predictable use

At the same time, the product architecture was designed to support:

  • Modular evolution
  • Future feature expansion
  • Adaptation to different user profiles and markets

This balance between social impact and scalability is central to Lumos Technologies’ strategy.

Legal Structuring and Governance from Day One

From the earliest stages, we recognized that innovation and impact must be supported by strong governance, compliance, and institutional structure. For this reason, Lumos Technologies was formally incorporated in Canada, with a focus on:

  • A legal structure designed for growth
  • Organized and transparent documentation
  • Compliance principles
  • Responsible data protection and privacy practices

This foundation not only mitigates regulatory risk but also prepares the company for strategic partnerships, capital raising, and international expansion.

Documentation as a Strategic Asset

One aspect often overlooked in early-stage startups is documentation. At Lumos Technologies, we treat documentation as a strategic asset, including:

  • Clearly defined MVP scope
  • Records of technical and product decisions
  • Process documentation and lessons learned
  • A foundation for future scalability and team onboarding

Documentation is not bureaucracy. It is a mechanism for continuity, consistency, and sustainable growth.

Key Learnings So Far

The MVP development phase has generated valuable insights:

  • Listening is more valuable than accelerating without direction
  • Focus reduces resource waste
  • Social impact requires ongoing responsibility
  • Early structuring increases credibility and reduces future risk

These lessons shape not only our product, but also our company culture.

Next Steps

With the MVP established, Lumos Technologies is moving into the next phase.

Our commitment is to build a solution that is technologically robust, socially responsible, and economically sustainable.
